Bankruptcy Settlement

Updated: 5 days ago

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

I pray this note finds you well and filled with God’s peace. Today, I am writing to address an important matter that I feel must be shared with you as members of our parish family.

As you may know, all parishes within our diocese were asked to contribute to the bankruptcy settlement as part of the resolution of claims involving past misconduct. While this has been a difficult chapter in our diocese’s history, it is essential for us to continue moving forward with transparency, accountability, and hope. We thank God we are able to close the chapter on this bankruptcy.

Our parish was named in two complaints, one dating back to the 1960s. The two priests involved have since passed away, and while the details of the claim are painful to acknowledge, it is important that we continue to pray for all victims of abuse and strive to support healing within the Church.

To meet our required contribution, Our Lady of Lourdes provided $41,762 to the settlement. The settlement for the Diocese was $323 million. I want to assure you that this amount came entirely from our parish reserves, which were set aside for such unexpected expenses. This obligation has already been fulfilled, and no additional fundraising or impact to our regular parish ministries was required.

I understand that this news may bring forth a mix of emotions—sorrow, anger, or even concern about the future of our parish. Let me reassure you: Our Lady of Lourdes remains a vibrant and dedicated faith community. With God’s grace and your continued support, we will persevere in our mission to serve, worship, and grow together in faith.

Please keep the victims of abuse, our diocese, and our parish family in your prayers. May we remain steadfast in our devotion to Christ and His Church, working together to ensure a safe and holy environment for all.

If you have any questions or concerns about this matter, I welcome you to reach out to me directly. I am always here to listen and support you.

Thank you for your faithfulness and commitment to Our Lady of Lourdes Parish. Together, we continue to be a beacon of light and love in our community.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Fr. Jim

Pastor
